Day 4- The Evidence for Evolution

Think/Discuss:

What observations did Darwin make that helped formulate his theory of evolution?

One of the observations Darwin made was that there were no mammals on the island. This is because it owuld be too difficult for mammals to actually reach the island. He also realized that there were a lot of reptiles, birds, and insects. In fact they are the only animals that are actually on the island. Darwin also realized that there were 13 different types of finches.

Evidence of Evolution: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cC8k2Sb1oQ8

  • All life started out as a single cell

  • Pigeons were selectively bred by humans creating several different types of pigeons

  • Biogeography shows that life in different places were different

  • Austrailia has a lot of marsupial

  • Galapogos had only one kind of birds (finches)

  • Turtles with longer necks had an advantage on the Pinta Islands

  • Life is different no matter where you go

  • Darwin brought fossils back to England that he was able to use as proof of evolution

Reflect/Journal:

I found the homologous, vestigial, and analogous features that were outlined in chapter 7.4 to be the best evidence supporting Evolution. These features in particular are things that you can actually observe which helps prove evolution. For example, the most compelling piece of evidence I learned was that human embryos are similar to other embryos such as chicken, fish, and turtles. When I learned that human embryos have gills as well as tails, it really made me embrace evolution. That to me was the most convincing piece of evidence. I don’t believe there could be another explanations for how human embryos have gills and tails other than evolution.

I was exposed to a lot more evidence in this chapter. The things I learned in this chapter was just amazing and the thing in particular that I found most intriguing was the fact that human embryos have gills and tails. That to me is just amazing because it provides us with actual evidence of evolution. The human embryo is also similar to embryos of other organisms. Learning about vestigial features was also insightful because it provides us with more proof of evolution. Vestigial features are really weird because for some organisms its pretty much a random part growing out of them. Overall 7.4 was a really cool section because of the content that was discussed.
